What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable treatments used to restore lost volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial features. Made from substances like hyaluronic acid (HA), calcium hydroxylapatite, or poly-L-lactic acid, fillers help plump the skin, improve contouring, and reduce signs of aging.
What Are Dermal Fillers Used For?
Dermal fillers can be used to:
✔ Restore volume loss in areas like the cheeks and temples
✔ Smooth wrinkles and fine lines, especially around the mouth and nose (nasolabial folds, marionette lines)
✔ Enhance lips for a fuller, more defined look
✔ Define the jawline and chin for a more sculpted appearance
✔ Improve the appearance of under-eye hollows
✔ Rejuvenate hands by restoring lost volume
Results are immediate and typically last between 6 months to 2 years, depending on the type of filler used.
Dermal Filler Pre and Post Instructions
Before Treatment:
To achieve the best results and minimize side effects:
-
Avoid strenuous exercise on the day of your treatment.
-
Try to schedule your appointment at least two weeks before any big event or vacation.
-
Avoid injections during your menstrual cycle to reduce sensitivity, bruising, and swelling.
-
Take Arnica Montana (12C strength) starting 3 days before treatment and continue for 5 days after to reduce bruising/swelling.
-
If you have a history of cold sores, talk to your doctor about preventive medication, as injections may trigger an outbreak.
-
Reschedule your appointment if you have a cold sore, blemish, or rash near the treatment area.
-
Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, St. John’s Wort, Gingko Biloba, Vitamin E, Fish Oil) for one week before and after treatment to reduce bruising.
-
Stop using Retin-A two days before and after treatment to avoid irritation.
-
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, high-sodium/sugar foods, refined carbs, spicy foods, and smoking for 24-48 hours before and after treatment to minimize swelling.
After Treatment:
To ensure proper healing and best results:
-
Expect some swelling, especially in the morning—this should gradually decrease throughout the day.
-
Sleep on your back with your head elevated for the first 7 days to minimize swelling.
-
Redness and swelling typically last less than 7 days—use cold compresses if needed. Contact your provider if symptoms persist beyond a week.
-
Do not touch or massage the treated area for at least 6 hours after treatment; after that, you can gently wash your face.
-
Avoid direct sun exposure, sunbathing, and extreme cold until redness/swelling subsides.
-
Refrain from exercise and alcohol for at least 6 hours after treatment.
-
Consider follow-up treatments before the product fully dissolves to maintain your results—consult your provider for recommendations.
